A Blog About My Travels To The UK!
Day 1
Today is the beginning of our first day in England! After arriving at King, we got carpooled our way to the O’Hare Airport in Chicago. However, somehow I forgot to take my passport! Luckily, I spotted this before we went into the airport, and my dad arrived with my passport just in time!
After that scare, we weighed our bags in the reception area before going into the TSA. The line wasn’t that long, so we got through without issue. I remember them having me put my bags through a machine where it would check for metals and other dangerous things in my carry-on and backpack. They also had me take off my shoes so they could check for anything dangerous (I didn’t have anything dangerous, don’t worry)! After we went through that, we went through the gates and waited for our plane to arrive. There was food and shops to go to while we waited, but I didn’t go to any of them (I was still nervy from the whole missing passport situation).
Once our plane arrived, we walked through a small jet bridge down to the plane we were riding in. Our plane was big, so we had nine seats in each row in the plane. I was sitting in the middle seat of three chairs. Since this was a long flight (eleven hours!), our airline had meals and snacks for us, as well as airline entertainment via screens on the back of the seats.
Our flight had a layover with Munich, Germany. We didn’t get to see the city, but we did see the country side of it! Unlike Wisconsin’s countryside, it had small towns and roads that led to said towns. It almost looked homey! The airport looked really fancy, though there was barely anyone there.
From Munich, we got on a plane to Manchester (our starting destination). The flight was shorter this time (about 3 hours), but I was insanely tired after today!
Day 2
We arrived at Manchester's airport early in the morning. We met our tour guide, Ailstair, and we went off to our coach bus to travel to Manchester.
There, we started our walking tour around Manchester! We first stopped by a little coffee shop called Black Sheep Coffee. They sold really good coffee and hot pastries there! I remember getting an iced latte there. After we stopped there for breakfast, we walked all the way to the Manchester Art Gallery.
The museum had many different types of art there. From paintings to statues to fashion history! It was definitely more expansive than the one here in Milwaukee.
Next, we visited the Manchester Cathedral. Since I’m a sucker for gothic and vintage churches, this was one of my favorite places we visited in Manchester. It was tall and classical and truly amazing to witness! If someone were to visit Manchester, that would be the first place I would recommend!!!
After walking around in Manchester’s shopping district, we arrived at our hotel for the next two nights. It was a small Holiday Inn outside of Manchester. They served us some okay dinner before we fell asleep in our separate hotel rooms.
Day 3
Today, we went to the Lake District! The drive to the countryside of Britain were soooo beautiful. We saw clear views of the mountains (yes, there were mountains there), the ancient dry stone walls along the fields, the small towns littered around countryside, and of course the huge, beautiful blue lake that the Lake District was named after! Really, it was a sight to behold for nature lovers like myself.
However, the point of going to the Lake District wasn't to admire the lushful landscape. It was to learn about William Wordsworth! To be honest with you all, I never heard of Wordsworth before this trip. From what I learned, he was a famous Romantic poet, known to be the founding father of the Romanticism Movement. We went to Rydal Mount and Dove Cottage, the home of Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy.
Our group went a museum before going to the homes. There, we learned about Wordsworth and Dorothy and how they spent their lifes in the homes. The most interesting thing I learned was how he never really showed his poems to the public. He would first write them, and then read them out loud to himself or to his family.
After visting Rydal Mount (and looking at the view over the town), we went to our hotel near the country side! Have I mentioned that so far, we've only had British food throughout the trip? It wasn't horrible as most people said, but it wasn't great either... Maybe that's my American brain craving for flavor.
Day 4
A new day, a new city! Today we visited Haworth and Yorkshire!
